The used iPhone buying guide: grades, battery, IMEI and returns

A well-chosen used iPhone can be almost indistinguishable from new at a fraction of the price. The trick is knowing what to check so you don't inherit someone else's problem.

1. Understand cosmetic grades

Most sellers grade phones by condition, usually A, B and C. Grading isn't an industry standard, so always read what each grade means for that seller.

• Grade A — near-new, minimal or no visible wear
• Grade B — light signs of use, small marks that don't affect the screen
• Grade C — visibly used, more noticeable scratches or dings

2. Check the battery health

Ask for the battery's Maximum Capacity percentage. Anything in the high 80s or above is comfortable for daily use; lower numbers should mean a lower price.

3. Make sure it isn't locked

Two "locks" catch people out:

• Carrier lock — the phone is tied to one network. Unlocked works on any carrier.
• iCloud Activation Lock — if the previous owner's Apple ID isn't removed, the phone is unusable. Confirm it's signed out and reset.
• Blacklisted IMEI — a reported-lost or unpaid phone can be blocked. A clean IMEI check confirms it's safe.

4. Test the essentials

• Screen (no dead pixels, touch works to the edges)
• Front and rear cameras, plus Face ID or Touch ID
• Speakers, microphone, call and speaker audio
• Charging port and wireless charging

5. Know your rights

In Australia, second-hand goods bought from a business are still covered by consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law. A reputable seller will also offer a warranty and a change-of-mind window.
